Katunayake, Sri Lanka – September 7, 2025 – In a powerful display of community solidarity, volunteers from across the Katunayake area came together today to breathe new life into the Liyanagemulla Lagoon. The clean-up program, organized by Shramabhimani Kendraya under the banner “A New Life for the Lagoon!”, saw enthusiastic participation from local workers, residents, students, and environmental activists.
From 8:30 AM onwards, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clear accumulated waste, including plastic, polythene, and debris, from the lagoon’s banks and surrounding areas. The effort emphasized not only cleanliness but also the importance of conserving natural habitats and aquatic ecosystems central to the region’s ecological health.
“It was inspiring to see so many people, especially youth and factory workers, take ownership of their environment,” said Sr. Noel Christine, founder of Shramabhimani Kendraya. “This is what sustainable change looks like—when a community comes together not just to clean, but to commit to long-term care of our natural resources.”
The event also served as an informal awareness session, with participants discussing ways to reduce pollution, practice proper waste disposal, and encourage others to respect and protect local waterways.
Shramabhimani Kendraya extends its gratitude to every volunteer and partner who contributed to today’s success.
